“VICTORY REPEATS ITSELF” EXPO
January 13 – March 5, 2017
FREEPORT/STEPHENSON COUNTY VISITORS CENTER
4596 US Highway 20 East, Freeport, IL
The Expo highlights the recently restored Victory statue that sits on top of the Civil War Monument in historic downtown Freeport. It features the photography of artist Amy Dreibelbis Fairweather of D+F Studio in Freeport and offers perspectives of the modern day Victory statue. Victory, erected in 1871, represented the dignity, triumph, passion and ingenuity of the people of Freeport, but unfortunately it was struck by lightning and destroyed in 1960. Since that time the community has faced struggles with the loss of industry, urban sprawl and, too often, defeatist attitudes. Through the efforts of a local Civil War Monument group, the statue was restored atop the 83 foot obelisk monument in December, 2015.
Since Victory has been restored to her rightful place, the City of Freeport and Stephenson County have been in a state of regeneration with new businesses, attractions and events, as well as the adoption of the “Freeport All In” brand. The Expo showcases Victory from a number of interesting perspectives which help us see her and the community in new ways. The “Victory Repeats Itself” Expo will be on display through March 5.
