April 4-6, FESTA DE YEMANJA: CELEBRATING OCEAN SPIRITS WORKSHOP. Freeport Art Museum, 121 N. Harlem Avenue, Freeport. 4:15 pm to 5:30 pm. For kids ages 6 to 11. In Brazil, the popular spirit of the sea is called Yemanjá. She is a Yoruba orixá carried to Brazil from West Africa (Nigeria, Togo, and Benin) during the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Yemanjá is celebrated on New Year’s in Rio and on February 2 in Bahia with massive public festivals at the water’s edge. Workshop participants make their own agogô (percussion instrument) and learn to play the Ijexá rhythm. Choreographic elements of Yemanjá’s dances will be taught. Supported in part by the Freeport Art Museum and the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency. No young artist will be turned away for lack of funds. This program is partially supported by the Freeport Art Museum and the Illinois Arts Council.
