April 29, DOUG FIREBAUGH OBSERVATORY OPEN HOUSE – 50TH ANNIVERSARY. Doug Firebaugh Observatory, 2892 W. Stephenson Street, Freeport. 11 am to 4 pm. Open house to showcase the observatory and celebrate 50 years as a community resource and venue for the promotion of astronomy. Visitors are welcome to tour the observatory buildings to see the telescopes and equipment that are used in their public outreach. Observatory staff will be on hand to explain and answer questions about the observatory, the telescopes, and the programs that are offered. Various displays will include a history of the observatory, information on the total solar eclipse that will happen in August, 2017, a selection of meteorites from the Planetary Studies Foundation collection, and a look at some of their personal telescopes that the observatory volunteers have and use. There will also be demonstrations of safe solar viewing and meteor detection by radio. Tour the observatory, view information and displays. Free, but donations appreciated. (815-291-3072)
