January 13-March 5, ‘VICTORY REPEATS ITSELF” EXPO. Freeport/Stephenson County Visitors Center, 4596 US Highway 20 East, Freeport. 8 am to 6 pm. “Victory Repeats Itself” is a photographic project by artist Amy Dreibelbis Fairweather of D + F studio depicting redolent perspectives of the modern day ‘Victory” statue that sits atop the 83 foot limestone obelisk Soldiers’ monument in downtown Freeport. The myth begins and ends as a social phenomenon involving the reclamation and regeneration of a community that was once in a chronic state of decline. As history would have it, the original “Victory” statue was created in 1869 by artist Giovanni Meli and erected in 1871 under the curation of General Smith D Atkins. At that time, it was the largest sculpture made in America, standing 13 feet high. The symbolic nature that “Victory” represented to Stephenson County was far more of an atmosphere felt rather than seen in the figure. “Victory” cast an atmosphere of dignity, value, a sense of triumph, passion, ingenuity and imagination that filled the hearts and minds of the people who lived and worked in Freeport. Industry was booming and entrepreneurship was at an all time high. The streets were bustling and the city’s progressive industry gave various businesses an international reach. “Victory’s” posturing was a brilliant mix of strong, confident, stern and imperious expressions softened with gestures of tender grace which was a curious inter blending of ancient and modern representing self reliance and justice. In 1960 an unfortunate turn of events happened and “Victory” was destroyed and knocked off its pedestal by a bolt of lighting. From there, the community steadily experienced a decline through the loss of industry, urban sprawl and defeatist attitudes. The decline evoked fear and a fixed grip from the curse cast on the area and this lead to a paralysis of innovation and growth for many years. The monument sat topless for 55 years until the efforts of the Civil War Monument group aligned and raised $120,000 to replace the destroyed “Victory” statue. December 4, 2015 marked the date for the erection of the new statue designed by Vincent Tolpo, a local artist. Since its resurrection, the City of Freeport and Stephenson County have been in a state of regeneration. Businesses are opening, the downtown is resurging, people are investing, the confidence is rising and the veil of darkness has been replaced with an air of optimism. This series was created to see ‘Victory’ from many perspectives and distill those vantage points into one prophetic story. It was created to invite the beholder to sense it’s original meaning and to mark the beginning of regeneration in the City of Freeport and the attitudes that make up the fiber of its community. Come experience the imagery through a combination of visual story telling and prose. (815-233-1357)
