April 8, BLOOMING PASQUE FLOWER FIELD TRIP. Freeport Prairie Nature Preserve, Walnut Road, Freeport. 3 pm to 4:30 pm. The public is invited to join the Northwest Illinois Audubon Society as they admire one of the prairie’s harbingers of spring, the Pasque Flower. Unlike the crocus it resembles, the Pasque Flower, Anemone patens, is a member of the buttercup family. In early spring the plant sends up a flower stalk in advance of leaves so what you see are delicate pale violet blooms nestled in the muted tan tangle of last year’s prairie grasses. See how the flower blooms actually move to track the sun. Meet in the prairie’s parking lot just off Walnut Road. After the prairie stroll, those who wish, can enjoy an early supper at a nearby restaurant. (815-938-3204)
