May 2-4, BUMBA MEU BOI/THE ENCHANTED OX: A BRAZILIAN FOLK TRADITION WORKSHOP. Freeport Art Museum, 121 N. Harlem Avenue, Freeport. 4:15 pm to 5:30 pm. For kids ages 6 to 11. Bumba meu Boi is a folk tradition celebrated in northeastern Brazil during the Festas Juninhas. Each year, this story of an enchanted ox is re-enacted by exuberant throngs of costumed dancers. Having originated in northeastern Brazil, between the Amazon and the arid catinga, where workers of African descent mingled with Indigenous persons and myths under a Portuguese and largely Catholic authority, the drama celebrates the heroic figure of the Indian in Brazilian history and highlights Brazil’s multi-ethnic composition. Workshop participants will build a papier-mâché boi (ox) and create costume hats. Participants learn to accompany Bumba meu Boi rhythms on matracas (wood blocks) and learn traditional dances. No young artist will be turned away for lack of funds. This program is partially supported by the Freeport Art Museum and the Illinois Arts Council. For registration and inquiries, visit www.deixafalar.com. Free or a suggested donation of $20-$30 (includes supplies). (415-572-1799)
