August 31-September 28, “MARIE’S PORTFOLIO”. Lena Area Historical Museum, 427 W. Grove Street, Lena. Saturday: 1 pm to 4 pm. This is a two part look at the art in the life of Freeport native Marie Langan Birkett. “The Other Side of Her Art” features over 200 watercolors, pencil and ink works found after Marie’s death. The subjects of these incredibly well-preserved pieces include fashion, people, everyday objects, flowers, landscapes, wallpaper patterns, ad mockups and more, done from the age of 13 in 1935 through 1949.  Looking at them reveals much of the period’s fashion and details of everyday objects in the 40’s, and some are delightfully whimsical statements about life. “Birkett Signs and After” features ad mockups and creative art done for various clients by Marie during the 30-some years she and her husband Bion owned Birkett Signs near Winslow. Marie’s daughter Barb and her husband Roy will be at the museum to answer questions and share memories. Suggested Donation: Adults: $3; Students: $1; Children 5 and Under: Free. (815-809-LENA)
